Why Stump Grinding is Recommended

When a tree comes down, it’s easy to assume the job is done. The hazard branches are gone, light is back in the garden, and the site looks clear. But a stump left in the ground isn’t a finished job — it’s an unfinished one, and over time it creates problems that are often more disruptive than the tree itself was.

At Tree Services Ltd, we’ve been removing trees and grinding out stumps across Kent since 1983, working to British Standard BS3998 on everything from single garden stumps to full commercial site clearances. Here’s what we tell clients on the fence about Stump Grinding.

1 Key Reason: Safety and Liability

Most homeowners assume stump grinding is mainly about how the garden looks. In our experience, it isn’t. The leading reason clients ask us to grind a stump out is safety.

A stump hidden under long grass, mulch, or autumn leaves is a trip hazard, for children and grandparents alike! It’s also a hazard to a lawn mower. It’s blade striking a concealed stump can cause significant damage to the deck and blades in an instant, an unwanted surprise when mowing the lawn!

More benefits of Stump Grinding

It Removes a Foothold for Pests and Decay

As a stump breaks down, it becomes an attractive site for wood-boring insects such as termites and carpenter ants, which will often move from a decaying stump toward nearby decking, fencing, or structural timber once established. Decaying stumps also tend to produce fungal fruiting bodies — some of which are toxic to pets and children. Grinding removes the wood mass that these problems rely on, rather than leaving it to break down naturally over several years.

It Frees Up Usable Ground

A stump sits in ground you often can’t do anything useful with — you can’t lay a patio over it, turf around it neatly, or plant a bed where the roots still are. Because grinding removes the stump to several inches below the surface, the area can be backfilled with topsoil and reseeded or built on almost immediately, rather than left as a dead patch that has to be worked around indefinitely.

It Reduces the Chance of Regrowth

Felling the trunk doesn’t necessarily kill the tree. A number of species — particularly natives like ash, sycamore, and willow — will continue sending up suckers from the surviving root system for years afterwards. These shoots compete with surrounding planting for water and nutrients and need repeated cutting back. Grinding the stump reduces the energy reserve driving that regrowth and generally cuts down on how much regrowth you’ll be dealing with.

It Finishes the Job Properly

A tidy garden just looks better without a rotting stump sat in the middle of it, and if you’re planning to sell up or develop the plot, it’s the kind of small job that’s worth ticking off. It gives the whole area a finished look rather than an unfinished one.

What Happens to the Wood Chips?

In line with our approach to every job, nothing goes to waste. Stump Grinding turns the stump into a mix of wood chips and soil, which makes an excellent mulch helping retain moisture and suppress weeds when worked back into borders.
